NAACP sues xAI over air pollution near Memphis data center
The NAACP has filed a federal lawsuit against xAI, alleging the illegal operation of 27 methane gas turbines in Southaven, Mississippi, which power its Colossus 2 data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The lawsuit claims these turbines violate the Clean Air Act by emitting significant pollutants without proper permits, posing health risks to nearby predominantly Black communities. The NAACP seeks to halt operations until xAI obtains permits, installs pollution controls, and pays penalties.
