Upstate NY crypto mine seeks to become data center
Greenidge Generation, operating in New York's Finger Lakes and recently rebranded as Vulcan Infrastructure and Power, is seeking to transform its bitcoin mining facility into a data center. This initiative is complicated by Governor Kathy Hochul's recently enacted moratorium on new data centers consuming 50 megawatts or more, and the company is requesting 200 megawatts of additional power. Environmental groups and local residents continue to oppose the facility, citing concerns over pollution and increased emissions.
