Greenidge Rebrands as Vulcan Infrastructure and Power
Greenidge Generation Holdings has rebranded as Vulcan Infrastructure and Power Inc., shifting its focus from bitcoin mining to developing infrastructure for AI data centers and supporting electric grids. The company secured $39.4 million in strategic investments to accelerate this transformation. This comes as New York State recently enacted a data center moratorium, which may impact future facilities.
Greenidge Generation Holdings has officially changed its name to Vulcan Infrastructure and Power Inc., signaling a strategic pivot from bitcoin mining towards developing infrastructure for artificial intelligence data centers and electric grid operations. The company announced approximately $39.4 million in new strategic investments from affiliates of Machine Investment Group, Atlas Holdings, and other institutional investors and insiders. This funding is intended to accelerate its transformation into a publicly traded power and digital infrastructure company.
The investment will be used to acquire, develop, and operate energized sites for AI and high-performance computing data centers, while also continuing to provide electricity to local power grids. Vulcan Infrastructure and Power, which changed its Nasdaq ticker to VIP on July 24, currently controls 104 megawatts of energized capacity and has a 654-megawatt development pipeline. The company plans to bring over 100 megawatts of AI-ready capacity online in the near term, addressing what it perceives as a growing shortage of power for AI infrastructure.
The rebranding and strategic shift occur within the context of New York State's ongoing debate over energy-intensive computing facilities. Governor Kathy Hochul signed the country's first data center moratorium in July, pausing permits for facilities consuming 50 megawatts or more of power to allow the state to establish regulations addressing energy use, environmental impacts, and community concerns. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has not yet indicated whether Vulcan's application falls under this moratorium.
