Greenidge shifts to data center, new name
Greenidge Generation Holdings has rebranded as Vulcan Infrastructure and Power and is shifting its Dresden, New York operations from crypto-mining to an AI data center. The company secured a $39.4 million investment and plans to increase its power draw from the state grid, a move that continues to face opposition from environmental groups like Seneca Lake Guardian. Vulcan states it will continue to provide critical power to the local grid and adhere to its emissions reduction agreement with New York State.
Greenidge Generation Holdings, which operates a power plant and former crypto-mining facility in Dresden, New York, has rebranded to Vulcan Infrastructure and Power. The company is pivoting its core operations from crypto-mining to high-performance computing (HPC) for artificial intelligence (AI) data center use, while continuing to generate electricity for the state grid.
The strategic shift is bolstered by an aggregate investment of approximately $39.4 million from affiliates of Machine Investment Group, Atlas Holdings, Conversant Capital, and certain company insiders. Vulcan officials stated the financing eliminates debt, strengthens the balance sheet, and positions the company for national growth in the data center market. The company also changed its Nasdaq ticker symbol to "VIP."
The rebranding and operational shift have drawn continued criticism from environmental groups such as Seneca Lake Guardian. Vice President Yvonne Taylor asserts that a new name does not erase past environmental concerns, broken promises, or threats to New York's climate goals. The company has applied to draw an additional 260 megawatts of power from the state grid, bringing its total requested draw to 420 megawatts, which opponents question given Vulcan's claims of providing grid stability.
Vulcan Infrastructure and Power, led by CEO Jordan Kovler, plans to leverage its existing energized capacity and development pipeline to capitalize on the increasing demand for AI and HPC infrastructure, which is constrained by reliable power availability. The company emphasizes its dual role as a power generation source and a data center developer, aiming to deliver value to customers, investors, and communities.
