Pa. environmental groups appeal permit for massive gas power plant meant to fuel data center

Three environmental groups have appealed a permit granted by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for a proposed 4.4 gigawatt natural gas power plant meant to power a massive data center at the site of the former Homer City coal-fired power plant in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The groups argue the permit was issued improperly and the plant will have significant environmental and public health impacts.

PA approves air quality permit for massive Homer City gas plant to power data centers

Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued an air quality permit to Homer City Generation, clearing the way for the construction of a proposed $10 billion, 3,200-acre Homer City Energy Campus. The campus would redevelop a former coal-burning power plant site in Indiana County, Pennsylvania to deliver up to 4.4 gigawatts of power for on-site data centers and local homes. While the project is touted as an economic opportunity, environmental groups argue that air pollution from the power plant will exacerbate the climate crisis and that the data centers will drive up the cost of electricity.
