Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued an air quality permit to Homer City Generation, clearing the way for the construction of a proposed $10 billion, 3,200-acre Homer City Energy Campus. The campus would redevelop a former coal-burning power plant site in Indiana County, Pennsylvania to deliver up to 4.4 gigawatts of power for on-site data centers and local homes. While the project is touted as an economic opportunity, environmental groups argue that air pollution from the power plant will exacerbate the climate crisis and that the data centers will drive up the cost of electricity.

Pennsylvania has approved an air quality permit for a massive $10 billion gas-fired power plant project in Homer City to power the state's growing data center industry. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) approved the permit in 157 days, much faster than the originally projected 285 days. While the project could create over 10,000 temporary construction jobs and 1,000 permanent positions, environmental groups strongly oppose it, arguing the plant's emissions will worsen the climate crisis and drive up electricity costs. The Clean Air Council executive director called the rushed permit approval a "death sentence" for nearby residents who will be exposed to the plant's toxic pollution.
