Homer City energy campus brings thousands of construction jobs to Indiana County
Homer City Generation says more than 1,800 tradespeople are working on its natural gas-powered energy campus in Homer City, with the workforce expected to reach 2,000. The project is projected to create more than 10,000 construction jobs and about 1,000 permanent positions, while Pennsylvania has imposed new approval requirements and restrictions on data centers.
Homer City Generation is employing more than 1,800 tradespeople and skilled contractors at its energy campus in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, with the workforce expected to reach 2,000 by New Year’s Day. The project is expected to generate more than 10,000 construction jobs over its lifespan and about 1,000 permanent positions, providing work for local union members and apprentices after the area’s coal plant closed.
Labor leaders including Shawn Steffee of Boilermakers Local 154 and representatives of the IBEW and Plumbers and Pipefitters unions described the project as a major opportunity for workers and the surrounding community. State Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman and state Rep. Jim Struzzi praised its economic impact, while Gov. Josh Shapiro has imposed what he calls strict data center guardrails, removing artificial intelligence data centers from the state permit fast track and requiring local approval before environmental review begins.
