Utilities seek federal pause on grid bidding amid AI-driven power demand

A coalition of utilities, including Xcel Energy and American Transmission Company, has asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to pause competitive bidding for transmission projects, arguing that delays hinder the infrastructure needed for AI and data centers. Ratepayer advocacy groups, such as the Wisconsin Citizens Utility Board, oppose this, warning it could lead to higher electricity bills for consumers.
