Proposed transmission lines unite some Republicans and Democrats in opposition
Proposed high-voltage transmission lines in southwestern Wisconsin are facing significant bipartisan opposition from residents and politicians, who cite environmental and land disruption concerns. A lawsuit has been filed against one project, and multiple lawmakers have called for a moratorium on the developments. While developers claim the lines will improve energy reliability, data center-driven energy demand is seen as a contributing factor to the political fervor surrounding the projects.
Two proposed high-voltage transmission line projects, the MariBell Transmission Project and the Bell Center–Columbia–Sugar Creek–Illinois/Wisconsin State Line Project (BECI), are generating widespread, bipartisan opposition across southwestern Wisconsin. Residents and politicians, including Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Crowley and Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, have voiced concerns about the projects' impact on land, ecosystems, and groundwater.
U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden, joined by other state lawmakers, has called for a moratorium on the developments, arguing that the projects have not adequately considered their environmental and agricultural impacts. Governor Tony Evers stated that the Public Service Commission, not the governor, is the regulatory agency responsible for such issues. Rebecca Cooke, Van Orden's opponent, also supports a moratorium, citing health and property concerns for Wisconsinites. Other lawmakers have expressed that their constituents feel "blindsided and overwhelmed" by the proposals.
Dairyland Power Cooperative is a co-developer of the MariBell project, while Midcontinent Grid Solutions oversees the BECI project. Developers contend the transmission lines will enhance energy reliability, resilience, and accessibility. However, opponents argue they will harm the environment and pass costs onto ratepayers. A group of landowners has already filed a lawsuit against the MariBell project, citing "private nuisance." Several dozen local governments have also passed resolutions opposing the projects.
Despite developers stating that data centers are not the primary driver for these transmission lines, experts suggest that the growing public and political awareness of energy-hungry data center developments has intensified the passion and bipartisan opposition surrounding the infrastructure projects, transforming it into a potent political issue.
