Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced a directive on Friday to halt new tax incentives for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers within the state. Beginning July 1, the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) will cease processing agreements for the Data Center Investment Program, effectively pausing the state's financial encouragement for new AI data center developments.

Governor Pritzker stated that the pause is intended to allow the General Assembly and stakeholders sufficient time to develop a "comprehensive framework." This framework will aim to manage the environmental and infrastructural concerns arising from the rapid expansion of the data center industry in Illinois, with a focus on protecting affordability, safeguarding natural resources, and ensuring responsible growth. His office has released an outline of this proposed framework.
