Residents in the Town of Port Washington, Wisconsin, are actively voicing their concerns regarding the ongoing construction of a 672-acre data center campus, a joint project involving Vantage, Oracle, and OpenAI. Local residents, including Chris Karnish, expressed significant disruption to their daily lives due to heavy traffic, constant dust, and nighttime lighting from the site, which they initially believed would never materialize.
Vantage, represented by Misty Allen, Vice President of Public Policy North America, held a community meeting to address the feedback and committed to being a good neighbor in the long term. Allen stated that Vantage meets monthly with officials from the Village and City of Port Washington and the local school district to provide updates and discuss mitigation strategies for issues like traffic and construction hours. However, residents like Karnish remain skeptical, feeling that their concerns are not being adequately heard despite the engagement efforts.
Allen acknowledged that construction is disruptive and highlighted efforts such as altering operating hours based on community feedback, planning a community newsletter, and setting up an email form for residents to submit concerns for a 72-hour response. The first phase of the data center project is reportedly on track for completion in 2028, with Vantage emphasizing long-term benefits to the community through job creation and economic growth.
