New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill was questioned during a press conference about Governor Kathy Hochul's decision to sign a moratorium on data center construction in New York. Governor Sherrill responded that New Jersey has proactively implemented its own "guardrails" for data center development, unlike New York which needed time to develop them. These guardrails include requirements for reporting energy and water usage, and ensuring developers fulfill commitments to communities, particularly regarding power provision and ensuring good union jobs.

Governor Sherrill stressed the importance of holding "Big Tech" accountable to protect New Jersey communities from negative impacts observed elsewhere, such as higher utility costs or environmental concerns. She emphasized that data centers operating in New Jersey must invest in communities and workers, ensure fair wages and benefits, and drive down utility costs; otherwise, they are not welcome.

The Mayor of South Brunswick also commented, noting that his township has hosted two data centers for decades without issue, providing good jobs. He acknowledged a newer data center and the need for legislation that provides guardrails to protect ratepayers regarding electricity usage, ensuring developers mitigate their impact on the power grid. He affirmed that the new state legislation gives local governments tools to negotiate with developers on equal footing.
