Tonganoxie residents share opposition of proposed power plant, data center
Residents of Leavenworth County, Kansas, are strongly opposing a proposed data center and power plant project by Cloverleaf Infrastructure, named Project Blue STEM. Hundreds attended a special county commissioners meeting to voice concerns about its proximity to schools and livestock, potential air and noise pollution, and a lack of support from elected officials. The project has not yet been approved.
The Leavenworth County community is actively opposing Project Blue STEM, a proposed data center and power plant project by Cloverleaf Infrastructure. The project, if approved, would be located just south of Tonganoxie, Kansas, spanning 1,000 acres.
Hundreds of residents gathered at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds for a special meeting held by the County Commissioners to express their frustrations. Concerns raised include the project's proximity to schools (within 1.2 to 3 miles) and livestock, potential impacts on air quality, and noise pollution. Fifth-generation farmer Davidson, who spoke at the meeting, highlighted the potential detriment to his family's farm and mentioned studies indicating health complications for animals within a certain radius of such data centers.
Residents also expressed disappointment with their elected leaders, feeling they are not being taken seriously and are prioritizing "multi-billionaire owned companies" over constituents' concerns. Kevin Gross, a community member, believes the public's strong presence at the meeting will significantly influence the project's future, as they seek transparency and community input on whether such a development is wanted in their area.
As of now, the Project Blue STEM has not been approved.
