Residents of Arcadia, Florida, are voicing strong concerns over a proposed 862-acre data center project by DeSoto County Industrial Park, LLC (DCIP). The project is seen by some county leaders as a potential economic boost for DeSoto County, one of Florida's poorest. However, many residents fear the development could erode the town's 'small-town charm,' which they cherish.

Public opposition erupted earlier this month, with residents attending a county commission meeting to express their disapproval, despite the data center not being on the official agenda. Speakers raised questions about potential pollution, increased water usage, and a general lack of information regarding the project's long-term impacts on the community.

Erica Robinson, speaking on behalf of DCIP, stated that the facility would utilize a closed-loop cooling system to significantly reduce water consumption and that the data center would be powered by a decommissioned plant being brought back online, thus preventing residential power bill increases. However, Robinson also noted that the project is still in its early stages, with no environmental research available for sharing yet, leaving many residents with unanswered questions.
