TVA Board Sets Higher Rates For Data Centers
The TVA Board of Directors approved higher electricity rates for data centers, effective October 1, to shift costs and protect residential and manufacturing customers. This decision is part of broader actions to ensure long-term reliability and meet accelerating electricity demand across the Valley region. The board also approved the 2026 Integrated Resource Plan and the FY 2027 budget.
The TVA Board of Directors announced the approval of new measures aimed at bolstering the region's energy security and reliability, while adjusting electricity rates for data centers. Starting October 1, data centers will face higher rates, a move designed to ensure these large power users cover the full cost of their energy and infrastructure, thereby preventing residential and manufacturing customers from subsidizing the growing demand.
Mike Skaggs, TVA interim president and CEO, stated that these actions strategically position TVA to address the increasing energy demands within the Tennessee Valley. The board also approved the recommendations outlined in the 2026 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) and the FY 2027 budget. The IRP projects a need for 11 to 32 gigawatts of additional generation capacity by 2040 to serve the rapidly expanding region, driven by population growth, advanced manufacturing, and data processing requirements.
TVA Chairman Mitch Graves emphasized the priority of maintaining low rates and high reliability for customers, noting the importance of not burdening families and small businesses with the costs associated with increased electricity consumption by AI and other advanced industries. Tom Rice, TVA Chief Financial Officer, reiterated that affordability and reliability are central to every budget decision, ensuring the ability to add new capacity and support economic growth.
This initiative aligns with TVA’s commitment to affordability, highlighted by its recent signing of the Ratepayer Protection Pledge, a national effort to ensure major power users bear their full energy costs.
