WFSU News Weekly Round-up
Florida has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging the company should have done more to prevent a shooting at Florida State University involving ChatGPT. Separately, a proposed AI data center in Jackson County is facing strong resident opposition due to environmental concerns, leading county commissioners to table discussions.
WFSU Public Media's weekly news round-up highlighted two significant developments related to AI and data centers in Florida.
Firstly, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced that the state has become the first to sue OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. This legal action stems from a shooting incident at Florida State University, where the accused gunman reportedly used ChatGPT for planning. The lawsuit prompts a broader discussion regarding the extent of responsibility AI companies bear, particularly when their technology is implicated in serious issues.
Secondly, a proposed AI data center in Jackson County is encountering substantial pushback from local residents. Community members voiced their concerns at a recent commission meeting, focusing on potential environmental impacts, especially regarding the local aquifer, with signs stating "Don't ruin our aquifer" and "We can't drink data." While some local residents recognize potential economic benefits, the commissioners decided to postpone the discussion, opting to gather additional information and await the implementation of a new state law concerning data centers.
