State lawmakers talk budget, data center regulation at end-of-session town hall

Rep. Gabel outlined the state's $55.9 billion fiscal year 2027 budget and addressed data centers and energy usage. She referenced the recently enacted Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act, designed to foster a reliable grid with sustainable energy. Gabel stressed the necessity of limiting data center scope to maintain a sustainable energy system.
Furthermore, Gabel highlighted the Protecting Our Water, Energy, and Ratepayers Act, which she introduced in February alongside State Sen. Ram Villivalam. This proposed legislation seeks to regulate data center construction and ensure proper water and energy use across Illinois. Gabel expressed confidence in the bill's prospects for passage during the upcoming November veto session. Other discussions included AI regulation by Rep. Gong-Gershowitz and mental health initiatives by Sen. Fine.
