This decision, reached after a public hearing on Monday, September 21st, grants the city a crucial period to thoroughly assess the potential local impacts of data centers within its jurisdiction.
The council's move comes more than a month after initial resident input on the proposal. During Monday's hearing, four residents voiced their support for the moratorium, with one specifically requesting consistent updates and transparency throughout the study period.
The moratorium will halt the consideration and construction of any new data centers for up to 12 months, with a provision for a potential one-year extension. During this time, the city plans to research local data center effects and review regulatory approaches used by other communities.
