Meta's new $27 billion AI data center project in Richland Parish, Louisiana, is reportedly causing significant disruption, or 'chaos,' for the small, rural community. Fortune AI reporter Sharon Goldman visited the site in February, which spans 4 million square feet across 2,250 acres—equivalent to roughly 70 football fields.
Goldman spoke with over a dozen residents who voiced concerns about rising rents due to thousands of out-of-state workers moving in, as well as struggles faced by local small businesses unable to secure contracts with Meta or provide catering services. Additionally, residents are experiencing significant noise and bright light pollution emanating from the massive, brightly lit site throughout the night. Despite these issues, the project is viewed by many as a crucial economic boom for an area in northeast Louisiana that has historically struggled with jobs and poverty.
Goldman noted that while such mega AI data centers promise long-term benefits, they are incredibly disruptive, and residents often don't fully grasp the scale of the changes until construction is already underway. Having visited five similar sites across the country, she concluded that the long-term outcomes remain uncertain, but the immediate impact on communities is one of chaos.
