Virginia Beach leaders revisit data center development rules
Virginia Beach council members are considering significant zoning changes to restrict future data center development. This move follows the planning committee identifying a loophole in the city's code that currently allows data centers in residential areas. Councilwoman Jennifer Rowe indicates strong support from the council and residents for these new restrictions.
Virginia Beach council members are revisiting data center development rules, prompted by the planning committee identifying a "gray area" in the city's code that currently categorizes data centers as wholesale or warehouse establishments, allowing them near residential areas.
Councilwoman Jennifer Rowe, representing District 10, stated the council is calling on the city attorney to draft new language to clearly define appropriate developments. If the code is changed, data centers would face new restrictions on location and size.
Rowe emphasized a unified stance among the council and many residents, stating the city lacks the land and resources to support large data centers. Currently, Virginia Beach hosts two smaller co-location facilities, but leaders indicate no interest in allowing larger developments.
