This comes as the county's Area Plan Commission (APC) holds public hearings on proposed amendments to its unified development ordinance, specifically targeting data center construction. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed their interest, stating the company plans to engage directly with residents and local officials to address concerns transparently and ensure the best project for the community.
Mike Schopmeyer, an attorney representing Amazon Web Services, spoke at a recent public hearing in Posey County, advocating against the proposed amendments. He argued that the current amendments are "overly restrictive" and not balanced. Schopmeyer also revealed that Amazon has moved off its initial preferred location and is now considering a new industrial site closer to highways, pledging not to file permits until the ordinance process is complete.
During the public comment session, Schopmeyer's request for extended speaking time was denied and he was reportedly "shouted down" by the audience, indicating active community interest and potential opposition to the development or the proposed regulations. The public hearing on the ordinance amendments has been continued to October 1 at Hovey House in Mount Vernon, where further discussions are expected to take place.
