Climate journalist Marin Scotten discussed the emerging concept of using cow manure to power data centers with Mark Brodie on KJZZ's "The Show." Scotten, who recently wrote on the topic, explained that while manure digesters have long converted waste into renewable natural gas (RNG) for heating or transportation, its application for data centers and AI is very new and currently limited.
Proponents argue that utilizing waste from industrial-sized farms to fuel energy-intensive data centers can reduce environmental waste and offer a sustainable power source. However, environmental groups and critics express concerns that government subsidies for manure-to-RNG conversion could create a "gold rush for manure," incentivizing larger herd sizes and further entrenching the factory farm system. They suggest such practices might be a form of "greenwashing," allowing data centers to claim sustainability without fundamentally altering their energy consumption patterns.
Scotten clarified that RNG from manure is unlikely to become a primary data center fuel due to limited supply. Instead, it is being explored as a "drop-in energy solution" that can be blended with other fuels or used as a backup, leveraging existing fossil fuel infrastructure. This convergence of agriculture, fossil fuels, energy, utility, and waste management industries presents a complex scenario with both potential benefits and significant drawbacks regarding environmental impact and agricultural practices.
