The Spartanburg County Council recently held a "fact-finding" panel to address community concerns regarding data center development. The meeting allowed council members and the public to hear from experts on various issues, including regulations, water supply, and potential noise impacts.
Experts explained that data centers generating their own power would require an air permit. They also detailed the projected water usage, noting that a data center could use an average of 459,000 gallons per day, equivalent to the usage of 2,200 single-family homes. Rick Jolly from the local water system assured that the data center's water demands could be supported without impacting residents, stating it would not be the county's top water consumer.
Noise concerns were also a key topic. While there are methods to mitigate construction and operational sounds from data centers, the county has not yet committed to implementing such measures. The panel emphasized that the meeting was strictly for information gathering and no decisions were made regarding the data center's future, with next steps to be decided by public discussion.
