His remarks followed the City's rejection on May 14 of a proposed 150-megawatt hyperscale data center in the Slavic Village neighborhood. Mayor Bibb criticized the proposal for its last-minute introduction without sufficient engagement with the administration or residents, citing concerns over environmental impact and rising utility costs.
The debate over data centers, driven by the global rise in artificial intelligence, has led some Northeast Ohio towns to enact moratoriums on new large data centers due to environmental and economic worries. The Cleveland City Council is currently considering a similar moratorium. This stance contrasts with organizations like the Greater Cleveland Partnership, whose CEO Baiju Shah urged cities to avoid bans, arguing it signals a "not open for business" environment. Mayor Bibb emphasized the "nuance" of data centers, noting existing facilities run by companies like Sherwin-Williams and Cleveland Clinic, and suggested that specific parts of the city could be appropriately zoned for such technology facilities, just not in residential areas like Slavic Village.
