The Charlevoix City Planning Commission is continuing to draft regulations for potential future data center developments, including a noise ordinance. No decisions were made, and commissioners hope to hold a public meeting in December before finalizing the rules.

Charlevoix officials are developing regulations for potential data center projects before any developers submit proposals to the city. The Planning Commission reviewed a data center noise ordinance from another state, but postponed action because some members were absent and revisions are still needed.

Planning and Zoning Director Jonathan Scheele said the commission has worked on the regulations for about six months, while City Manager Mark Heydlauff said the goal is to address community concerns transparently and give the city greater control over future developments. Officials said no developers have approached Charlevoix with data center plans, and the commission hopes to hold a public meeting in December.
