Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp announced that the county is pursuing a one-year moratorium on data center development. This 12-month pause is intended to provide the recently established Hamilton County Planning Department, which commences operations on Wednesday, an opportunity to research the effects of data centers in other areas.

During this period, the planning department will also consult with local utility providers, including EPB, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and Tennessee Water, to evaluate their infrastructure's capacity to support large data center facilities. Mayor Wamp expressed skepticism about the immediate necessity of data centers in the county but stated that the transparent process might identify suitable technologies or locations after the study.

The County Commission is slated to vote on the proposed moratorium on July 15. The Chattanooga Times Free Press will continue to provide updates on this developing story.
