Gov: Rural Hall Town Hall, Mayor Terry Bennett
More than 100 Rural Hall residents gathered at Town Hall to voice strong opposition against a proposed data center project during a community meeting. Rhonda May, a resident, articulated the popular sentiment that a data center is not needed so close to residential areas, suggesting industrial zones as more appropriate locations. The proposed data center, led by DRock Group LLC, is estimated to generate an annual property tax revenue of $30 to $60 million and involve a $3 billion capital investment, which developers claim would be the largest in Forsyth County history. Mayor Terry Bennett assured residents that their concerns were being heard, emphasizing the town's commitment to ensuring their voices are acknowledged. The project is slated to cover approximately 130 acres in the center of Rural Hall, along Glade Street and off Bethania-Rural Hall Road. Residents living near the proposed site raised numerous frustrations, including potential issues such as noise, pollution, environmental impacts, and a potential increase in utility bills for water and energy. Concerns also revolved around the construction process and the proximity of the facility to residential areas, including a school and playground. Project managers revealed that the site plan will require revisions after the discovery of two streams on the property. Rural Hall leaders have scheduled a public hearing on the proposed data center for May 15th, which will be followed by a public comment period.
