Fresno moves forward with citywide data center ban

The Fresno City Council has unanimously voted to advance a citywide ban on data centers. On Thursday, the council directed city staff to draft a development code change that would define and prohibit data center facilities, which are not currently listed as an allowed use under any city zoning.
The proposed ban is intended to last for 10 years, with its continuation beyond that period requiring a future council vote. The regulation would encompass both existing land within Fresno and any properties subsequently added to the city. Council members would also receive immediate notification of any incoming data center applications.
Councilmember Nick Richardson stated that the policy aims to remove apprehension and speculation surrounding data centers, particularly concerning the Southeast Development Area. Planning Director Jennifer Clark indicated that the drafting process for the code change could take anywhere from a few months to up to one year to complete.
