Trustees vote against tax abatement for data center in Saline Township
The Saline Township Board of Trustees voted against a proposed 50% tax abatement for an Oracle hyperscale data center project. This decision followed a heated public meeting where residents voiced significant opposition to granting a tax reduction for the multi-billion dollar development. The board ultimately sided with the residents.
The Saline Township Board of Trustees held another heated meeting to discuss a proposed tax abatement for a hyperscale data center. Following an inability to reach a decision last week, the board on Tuesday ultimately voted against the tax abatement request from tech giant Oracle.
Oracle had sought a 50% reduction in real and personal property taxes for its upcoming data center, estimated to cost more than $43 billion. This request for a 12-year abatement, colloquially known as "The Barn," sparked significant public outcry from residents.
During extensive public comment, many residents voiced concerns about granting such a substantial tax break to a large corporation. They argued that Oracle, as a multi-billion dollar company, did not require tax incentives.
After hours of deliberation and resident appeals, the Board of Trustees voted no on the proposed tax abatement.
