Developers are proposing "Project Thunderbird," a multi-campus data center development in Enid, Oklahoma, estimated to be a $35 billion investment. This ambitious project, spanning nearly 1,750 acres across four campuses, could generate up to 4,000 construction jobs and over 600 permanent positions. Co-manager Chad Dillingham, who is also District 8 chairman of the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission, highlighted Enid's existing resources like water, power, and fiber access as key reasons for choosing the location, noting a recently built $356 million water line capable of doubling resources.
Project officials state the data centers would utilize a closed-loop water system and raw water, alongside an on-site power generation facility designed not to strain the existing grid but potentially aid it. This generation facility is also intended to provide backup energy for Vance Air Force Base, fulfilling a Department of Defense requirement for continued operation even if the main grid fails. Enid Mayor David Mason acknowledged the project's potential benefits but emphasized the need for "guard rails" and protections for citizens, indicating a long approval process ahead.
However, the proposal is in its early stages and has encountered significant community concerns. Residents are vocal about potential negative impacts, including increased water usage, noise from the data centers, and broader environmental effects. Some neighbors worry particularly about noise, as two proposed sites are close to residential areas, although project officials point to existing city ordinances for decibel limits. The project requires city approval and will go through a zoning process, which will include opportunities for community input.
