Columbia County Google data center to be one of largest in the country
Google is developing one of its largest data centers in Columbia County, Georgia. The county manager addressed taxpayer concerns about environmental impact, assuring that strict environmental guidelines, particularly regarding water consumption, have been established for the facility. The project is also expected to generate significant tax revenue for the county.
A new Google data center, set to be one of the company's largest on a single site, is progressing in Columbia County, Georgia. County Manager Scott Johnson confirmed the project, which will be located at the White Oak parcel and Pumpkin Center site, has been in development for over a year and is now becoming a reality expected to impact the county for decades.
Johnson acknowledged that hundreds of Columbia County taxpayers had attended commission meetings, expressing concerns about the data center's potential environmental impact and its effect on the quality of life. In response, the county conducted extensive research, including visits to data centers in Loudoun County, Virginia, to learn from their experiences and avoid similar mistakes.
These efforts, Johnson stated, have resulted in some of the country's strictest environmental guidelines for data centers. He emphasized that much of the information circulating about data centers is outdated, particularly regarding water consumption. Johnson assured that the Columbia County facility is not designed for the excessive water usage figures often cited, such as 500 million gallons a day, and the county would not provide that capacity.
The county's plan is to leverage the income generated by the data center to offset residents' property taxes, potentially eliminating them entirely. Johnson explained this would be a credit on tax bills, effectively having the taxes paid by the data center's revenue. Google declined an interview but issued a statement expressing optimism about growing in Georgia and driving economic growth in Columbia County.
