Hitachi Energy is set to invest $528 million in expanding its transformer manufacturing facilities in Copiah County, Mississippi, a move expected to generate 654 new jobs. This significant investment, the largest by the company in the United States, aims to address the rising demand for electrical infrastructure from various sectors, including utilities, manufacturers, and data centers.
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves announced the project at the G20 Summit in Houston, highlighting the state's success in attracting major economic development. The expansion will involve constructing a new manufacturing facility on a 45-acre site within the Copiah County Industrial Park in Gallman, with production anticipated to commence in 2029. The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) and Copiah County are providing assistance, including site development and infrastructure improvements through the MFLEX program.
Company officials, including Hitachi Energy CEO Andreas Schierenbeck, emphasized the necessity of bolstering grid infrastructure to support economic growth, citing the rapid increase in electricity demand. This project is noted as a substantial addition to Mississippi's economic portfolio, building on recent successes like Amazon Web Services' data center investment in Madison County. The expansion is projected to more than double Hitachi Energy's workforce in Copiah County, bringing the total to over 1,100 employees.
