Chinese-affiliated bot farms are actively attempting to manipulate public discourse surrounding data center development in the United States, according to a report from X's Global Government Affairs team. The report, first covered by Axios, indicates that Chinese propaganda has infiltrated American circles to potentially hinder the U.S. in the global race for AI dominance. X identified approximately 200,000 bot accounts, with about 200 specifically posting manipulative content related to AI data centers.
This debate is especially prominent in Alabama, where the upcoming statewide general elections feature data centers as a significant issue. U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, the GOP nominee for governor, has repeatedly suggested that opposition to data centers is partially influenced by China. In contrast, former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, the Democratic nominee for governor, has proposed a one-year moratorium on all data centers, making it a central point of his campaign.
Further adding to the policy discussion, the Association of County Commissions of Alabama recently voted against industry-specific planning and zoning authority that would empower county commissions to regulate data centers. The association argues that such a move would break decades of precedent, instead advocating for a more comprehensive approach to foster strategic growth in the state's unincorporated areas.
