The Dubuque County Board of Health is establishing a data center health impact citizens working group to gather public input on potential concerns related to data center development. Dr. Kathryn Dolter, chairperson of the health board, expressed apprehension regarding the environmental and public health implications of data centers, including impacts on air and water quality, noise, and light pollution.

The resident-led committee is tasked with examining these issues throughout the county's active 12-month moratorium on data center construction. The group will meet monthly and is expected to develop recommendations for new regulations to be incorporated into the county's ordinance. Concerns were also raised by residents, including John Ryan, about the county's capacity to effectively monitor and enforce any new regulations.

According to county staff, no formal data center applications have been submitted to date. The health board aims to begin receiving public input from the committee next month, with discussions from a recent town hall indicating that a potential sanction for non-compliance could include immediate facility shutdown.
