UC Council Holds Public Hearing On Proposed Data Center Zoning Ordinance
Union City held an informational public hearing on a proposed data center zoning ordinance, but the City Council took no action. The proposal would establish acreage, residential setbacks, buffer requirements, noise studies and utility-impact reviews, including stricter standards for hyperscale facilities.
Union City officials held a public hearing on a proposed data center zoning ordinance designed to establish development standards before facilities are proposed in the city. The hearing was informational, and the City Council did not vote on the ordinance.
Mayor Terry Hailey said the proposal would define data centers and require facilities of roughly five acres to be at least 500 feet from residential zones. Hyperscale data centers exceeding 100,000 square feet and requiring about 50 megawatts of electricity would need at least 20 acres and a 1,000-foot residential setback, along with buffer, separation, noise-study and utility-impact requirements. The Planning Commission previously voted to advance the proposal to the City Council, which is expected to take action in the future.
