ERCOT officials project that Texas's energy demand will more than quadruple by 2032, with electricity use from data centers expected to increase by over 30 times in the next six years. This significant growth is attributed to the numerous operational and planned data centers in the state, many of which have received substantial tax exemptions.

ERCOT officials on Friday presented alarming predictions for Texas's energy consumption, forecasting a more than fourfold increase in overall energy demand by 2032. A significant driver of this projected growth is the burgeoning data center industry, with ERCOT estimating that electricity use from data centers alone will surge by over 30 times within the next six years. According to the online research tool Data Center Map, Texas currently hosts 444 data centers, either operational or in planning stages. The state comptroller's previous announcement that major data centers received over a billion dollars in tax exemptions further indicates the rapid expansion expected in the sector. Dr. Harish Krishnamoorthy, an energy grid researcher at the University of Houston, highlighted the immense power requirements of modern data centers, comparing them to the peak power consumption of entire countries like Luxembourg or Panama. He also cautioned that data center construction could be slowed by issues such as the long supply chain queue for critical large transformers, and suggested that future growth would depend on regulatory frameworks. ERCOT officials, however, refrained from commenting on potential impacts on electricity prices or the likelihood of power outages despite these growth projections.
