Microsoft has announced that its data center sites in Catawba County, North Carolina, will use significantly less water than initially projected in 2022, with demand expected to be 75-80% lower. Microsoft has revised its water consumption projections for its data center facilities currently under construction in Catawba County, North Carolina. According to a company spokesperson, the anticipated demand for water is now estimated to be 75% to 80% lower than initial expectations from 2022. The data centers, which are known for their high water usage, will receive their water supply from the city of Hickory.

Microsoft is developing four data centers across two main sites in Catawba County, including one larger site off Stover Court near a Target distribution center in Hickory and another in Conover off N.C. Highway 16. Work also began on a smaller site in Hickory off Tate Boulevard this summer.
