The Data Center Impacts That We’re Not Talking About Enough

At SXSW's 'Dirty Data: The Hidden Climate Cost of Our Digital Lives' panel, experts highlighted the escalating environmental impact of modern AI data centers. Thomas Sisto, CEO and co-founder of XL Batteries, noted that while data centers have long existed, AI-specific facilities consume significantly more energy and water. Anurag Bajpayee, CEO of Gradiant, illustrated this, explaining that an AI data center can demand up to 1.2 gigawatts of power, enough for 90,000 homes, and can destabilize the energy grid with load spikes. The discussion also focused on immense water consumption, with the Houston Advanced Research Center estimating Texas data centers could use 161 billion gallons annually by 2030 amidst drought conditions. Beyond energy and water, Breana Wheeler, director of U.S. operations at BREEAM, pointed out other neglected issues: electronic waste containing harmful chemicals, heat production, and air/noise pollution. Wheeler emphasized that data centers are increasingly becoming their own utility providers, essentially mini power plants within communities. While acknowledging the inevitability of data center expansion, panelists explored solutions to minimize harm. Wheeler suggested funneling waste heat to warm homes or greenhouses, while Bajpayee highlighted Gradiant's work on treating concentrated water in closed-loop systems to make recycling more efficient. The panel aimed to shift the narrative from resource extraction to community benefit, emphasizing innovative approaches to mitigate the environmental footprint of these digital infrastructures.
