The Georgia Public Service Commission has officially approved Georgia Power's contract to supply electricity to the proposed OpenAI data center in Effingham County. This agreement will provide 3200 megawatts of new power capacity specifically for the facility. Under the terms of the contract, OpenAI is mandated to bear the full cost of the necessary infrastructure required to serve its data center.
Furthermore, OpenAI has committed to implementing measures to reduce its energy consumption during periods of high demand on the power grid. Georgia Power anticipates that this contract, along with contributions from other large energy users, will generate approximately $950 million annually in savings for its customers.
