Environmental advocates, including Kavi Chintam from Vote Solar and Hannah Flath from the Illinois Environmental Council, gathered at the Illinois State Capitol for an environmental lobby day. They are urging state lawmakers to pass several environmental protections, prominently featuring the proposed POWER Act. The POWER Act, or 'Protecting Our Water, Energy, and Rate Payers Act,' is designed to safeguard Illinois communities from potential negative impacts of the rapidly growing data center industry.
Concerns surrounding data centers include their potential to overwork the state's electricity grid, leading to increased energy prices for residents, and their substantial water usage. Flath highlighted that the legislation would require data center companies to use their own clean energy sources, pay for necessary grid upgrades, be transparent about water consumption, and limit the use of diesel generators. The act also aims to ensure data centers engage with communities, particularly environmental justice communities, to mitigate harm and create community benefit agreements.
The lobby day comes as data center development is trending across Illinois, evidenced by Sangamon County's recent approval of land use for a $500 million data center. Advocates expect hundreds of attendees to rally for the passage of these bills, including the Wetlands Protection Act, emphasizing the need for robust state-level protections to improve residents' quality of life and health.
