Data center construction, operations timeline shared
QTS Data Centers has released the construction and operations timeline for its $10 billion, 500-megawatt data center campus in Van Wert, Ohio. The first building is expected to be operational by Q1 2029, with full buildout by 2032. QTS also detailed its plans for energy infrastructure improvements and a closed-loop water cooling system to address community concerns.
QTS Data Centers has shared the construction and operations timeline for its previously announced $10 billion, 500-megawatt data center campus at the Mega Site in Van Wert, Ohio. According to Katie Erwin, QTS Senior Director of Communications, the campus will feature up to seven buildings across 902 acres. Groundbreaking is anticipated in the fourth quarter of this year, with the first building projected to be operational by the first quarter of 2029, and full campus development expected around 2032.
Erwin addressed community concerns regarding power and water usage. She stated that QTS will fully fund energy infrastructure improvements in collaboration with American Electric Power, incurring no cost to ratepayers. For cooling, the campus will employ a closed-loop system designed to consume no water, effectively saving billions of gallons annually, though it will require the purchase of approximately 660,000 gallons of water from the city.
QTS cited Van Wert's access to power, connectivity, skilled workforce, existing infrastructure, and the community's interest in attracting investment as key factors in their site selection. The company also highlighted local leadership's commitment to responsible development. QTS has other data centers under construction in New Albany, Ohio, and operates over 90 facilities across 15 states and five European locations.
