Elkhart City Council considers data center moratorium
Elkhart City Council is considering a temporary moratorium on new data center and battery storage projects. This proposal aims to allow the city time to study potential impacts and establish regulations, with a vote and public comment scheduled for an upcoming meeting.
Elkhart, Indiana, is considering a temporary moratorium on new data center and battery energy storage facilities. The proposal, introduced by Mayor Rod Roberson and Elkhart City Councilman Aaron Mishler, had its first reading on Monday, with a vote and public comment session scheduled for August 27th.
Mayor Roberson stated the pause is necessary to allow the city time to study the potential impacts of such developments on residents and to establish proper regulations. Councilman Mishler emphasized that without a moratorium, the city currently lacks mechanisms for public hearings or objections if a data center developer were to acquire properties for development.
Although Elkhart has not yet received a formal application, consultants have expressed interest in the area. The proposed ordinance would prevent the city from accepting or processing new applications. If approved, the moratorium would remain in effect until the city completes its review and the council terminates it, or until December 31, 2027, whichever comes first.
