Metro Council approves eminent domain legislation for Nashville Zoo data center

Nashville's Metro Council has passed legislation that authorizes the Metro government to acquire property next to the Nashville Zoo, where data center company DC Blox plans to build a facility. Filed by Mayor Freddie O’Connell, the legislation permits the city to negotiate a sale with DC Blox but also grants the power of eminent domain if negotiations fail. The city would be required to pay at least market value, estimated at $37.4 million, for the property, which DC Blox purchased for $23 million the previous month.

This move is described as the city's most direct attempt to prevent the data center's construction, following the Metro Council's recent approval of Nashville's first data center regulations and a temporary construction moratorium until December. Council Member Courtney Johnston, who voted in favor of the legislation, acknowledged the extreme nature of eminent domain but emphasized her commitment to protecting the zoo, despite concerns over potential taxpayer liability. The Mayor's office confirmed plans to proceed with the acquisition process, while DC Blox stated its continued commitment to developing its Nashville project.
