Fit Energy is proposing a $35 billion, 15-building data center campus and three natural gas power stations on former mine and quarry land in Newport Township. Residents are challenging the township’s zoning changes and lack of public input, with a lawsuit filed and concerns about impacts to a protected bat cave, utilities and local infrastructure.

Fit Energy plans to repurpose 1,386 acres in Newport Township for a 15-data-center campus, three natural gas power stations and related infrastructure. Township officials say permits were issued in August, while the developer plans an informational meeting for residents and describes the project as a potential source of tax revenue, construction work and permanent jobs.

Residents, including plaintiff Laura Riechers, say the project moved forward without adequate public transparency. Three residents have sued Newport Township and its commissioners, while concerns also focus on the site’s proximity to a state- and federally protected bat cave. Township Solicitor Chris Slusser said officials followed public notice requirements, restored local zoning oversight and will require a full impact assessment before development proceeds.
