One of the country's largest data centers is planned for Pittsylvania County, Virginia, promising significant economic impact. Hyperscale data center company Stack Infrastructure agreed in March to purchase nearly 3000 acres at the Berry Hill Mega site for around $720 million. The company plans a colossal $73 billion investment into the project over the next 30 years, which is anticipated to create over 2000 full-time, badged employees, in addition to 2000-4000 construction jobs.
This proposed facility will be a "digital campus" focused on AI and AI training, distinct from traditional cloud data centers like the Google Center planned in Botetourt. It is expected to involve a substantial number of employees working directly on AI-related tasks.
Pittsylvania County Economic Development Director Matt Rowe highlighted that, unlike many other data centers in the state, this project will not receive local tax incentives and will pay a full tax rate. It is projected to generate between $50 million to $100 million in tax revenue annually for the county, which can be directed towards improving schools and providing additional citizen services. The $720 million from the land sale will be split between Danville and Pittsylvania County.
