Sedgwick County has extended its interim control period on data center applications through Dec. 24 while staff develops permanent regulations. Sedgwick County, Kansas, is developing regulations for data centers while keeping applications on hold under an interim control period extended by the county commission through Dec. 24. County planners say the pause is intended to clarify zoning rules for a land use not currently defined in the county code, rather than promote new development.

The draft framework divides facilities into micro, standard, large and hyperscale categories and outlines potential requirements including landscape plans, visual-impact analyses, noise mitigation, air-quality assessments and water-utilization reports. The regulations remain subject to public and committee review, with meetings scheduled in October and November before the commission potentially considers adoption Dec. 16. Derby City Planner Scott Knebel said recent city zoning changes may address local needs, but no data center applications have been received and suitable sites appear limited.
