Charlotte Council to discuss mayor vacancy, data center freeze
The Charlotte City Council is holding a public hearing on a proposed 150-day moratorium on data center development, which would halt approvals and new applications. A final vote on the moratorium is expected next month. The council will also discuss the upcoming mayoral vacancy.
The Charlotte City Council is scheduled to meet tonight for a public hearing on a proposed 150-day moratorium on new data center developments within the city. If enacted, this measure would temporarily prevent the Council from approving data center projects or accepting new applications until a comprehensive review can be completed. A final vote on the moratorium proposal is anticipated to take place next month.
In addition to the data center discussion, the council's agenda includes addressing the imminent vacancy in the mayor's office. Current Mayor Vi Lyles is slated to depart from her role on June 30th. Council members and the City Manager will outline the process and schedule for selecting an interim mayor, a position that more than half of the current council members have expressed interest in pursuing next year.
