Meta has revealed a substantial expansion of its data center in Eagle Mountain, Utah, a project that commenced in 2018. The city has expressed full support for the plan, emphasizing a strong partnership with the social media giant rather than imposing conditions.
The expansion agreement includes significant community investments, with over $1 million allocated to education funding. Specifically, $600,000 will enable the Lake Mountain School District to acquire three acres for a new elementary school, and another $450,000 will fund the construction of the Walden Park Observatory, intended for science education. Mayor Jared Gray highlighted Meta's consistent commitment to the community over eight years, noting financial benefits for schools, road and water system improvements, and job creation.
City Communications Manager Kyle Ireland also praised Meta's proactive approach to energy management, citing the inclusion of a 150-megawatt battery storage facility as part of the expansion. While acknowledging the broader "hot topic" of data centers and associated opposition in Utah, such as a recent 180-day moratorium in Clearfield, Eagle Mountain maintains that its partnership with Meta is beneficial for one of the nation's fastest-growing communities.
