Protesters gathered on the Michigan Capitol steps in Lansing to call for stronger local oversight before data center projects proceed. Dorr Township resident Rachel McGrady-Hawley said a proposed data center campus across from her home has disrupted her life and argued that such facilities do not belong in residential neighborhoods.

The event, hosted by Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Anthony Hudson, also featured criticism of Flock cameras and other automated surveillance systems. Economic Development Responsibility Alliance of Michigan representative Marjorie Steele said opposition to the projects and surveillance technology crosses partisan lines. Candidates Jocelyn Benson and John James did not attend but have previously supported guardrails and protections for communities, while data center proponents point to jobs, tax revenue and economic growth.
