The St. Charles City Council is holding a public hearing to consider a proposal to ban large-scale data centers within city limits. This initiative follows a previous controversial project and an enacted one-year moratorium to study data center regulations. The Zoning Commission has already voted to recommend the ban to the City Council.

The St. Charles City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on a proposal to ban large-scale data centers within city limits. This action comes after months of debate and a previously controversial data center project on the city's north side near Highway 3.70, which was eventually dropped. The original project would have included multiple large buildings and raised significant public concerns.
Residents had voiced worries about water quality, high energy consumption, construction impacts, diesel fuel storage, and potential effects on wildlife and the city's water supply. In response to these concerns, the city had put a one-year moratorium in place to study potential data center regulations. The current proposed ban is being considered six months into that existing moratorium.
The Zoning Commission has already voted 7-3 to send the proposed ban to the City Council. While some supporters believe a clear line is needed on where large data centers belong, others argue a complete ban goes too far and suggest focusing on specific rules. A final vote on the proposal is not expected at tonight's public hearing but could come before the City Council for a decision later this month, possibly by May 19th.
